Compacted Stone Base Requirements
1. DEPTH 4" minimum thickness - to be determined by local soil conditions.
2. SLOPE Stone elevation shall maintain slope of 1/4" per foot toward low end.
Base must exhibit positive drainage.
3. COMPACTION Density requirement is 90% compaction with final condition of
stone as level and stable so as not to shift when traveled on or during surface installation process.
A compaction test is recommended.
4. POROSITY Stone base course shall maintain porosity for direct drainage.
Care must be taken not to choke off porosity with concrete powder or slurry.
5. ENCLOSURE A retaining curb of concrete, plastic or wood shall surround stone base course
Example No. 1: For a 2" ProDek system, top-of-curb elevation shall be 2" above top-of-compacted stone elevation.
Note: As the ProDek system depth changes, so shall the difference between top of curb and top of compact stone.
(See ProDek Edge Detail "Q")
Example No. 2: Note: If the ProDek is to cover the retaining curb, the compacted stone base shall be
flush/even with the top of the curb. (See ProDek Edge Detail "M")
6. DRAINAGE Subsurface drainage is recommended under and around a stone base.
Perforated pipe or similar system is acceptable.
7. TOLERANCES 1/4" in any 10-foot direction and 1/8" in any 3-foot direction.
8. STONE SELECTION (It is critical that the use of different stone sizes described below is strictly adhered to).
Stone shall be uniformly mixed in an approving pugmill or on a mixing table or by other mechanical means
(such as quarry blending operations) prior to placement on the subgrade. Test samples will be taken after
mixing, and the material shall conform to specified requirements prior to placement on the subgrade.
The material shall be wetted during mixing operations if necessary for proper blending.
9. STONE GRADATION
| U.S. Sieve | Percent Passing |
| 1" | 100% |
| 3/4" | 90 - 100% |
| No. 4 | 35 - 60% |
| No. 30 | 10 - 30% |
| No. 200 | 6 - 9% |
